Everyone would love for their dog to stay in their yard without a leash on. We would love to allow our dogs to roam free. Most of us are convinced that they’ll take off running. In most cases the people are correct. The hard part is understanding why do dogs take off running? Let’s explore.
Maybe your doggy is looking for love? Some dogs especially ones that are not spayed and neutered have a strong desire to leave. They all have a little Casanova in them.
Your dog may be bored. Dogs not having much activity from day to day going in the same backyard surrounded by another set of walls can be stressful. Running around in the same place is great for about five minutes. Dogs love to explore.
Anxiety! Something triggered their flight response. This could be with loud noises, like fireworks, or thunderstorm. Lastly, they do it because they enjoy the adventure.
If your dog has not been spayed or neutered this may be the cause your dog jumps the fence well at least twice a year if a male. If a female, this could be why she gets a ton of visitors. During spring and the middle of fall if your dog is not going to mate then it would be best to keep him/her on a leash.
If your dog is bored. This may be a reason your dog jumps or digs his way out. Dog breeds like the Siberian Husky are escape artists. They have a wondering mind. Always trying to explore. Your dog could be this way too. One way to counteract this behavior is to work your dog with obedience or make sure it gets structured exercise. Having a dog work its mind and body is exhausting. If you do this, your dog will have to take time to recover and will be fulfilled.
Anxiety can be a big cause of your dog escaping the backyard. If you realize your dog is in the bathtub during a storm or under the table when you are home, then this could be the reason in the backyard. This could be the major reason especially if it doesn’t happen all the time. Most dogs that are bored could careless if you are watching them outside. You can usually see them exploring and looking for a way out. The ones that get scared can be the enigma. For steps with this would be to find out what your dog is afraid of and work through the behavior. The other would be to never let the dog out unsupervised.
Dogs running away happen for a variety of reasons. It is our job to help our dog’s through such times. We must help them, show them what we need in the back yard. We also must make sure we’re giving them outlets other than running it out. They’re nomadic and we should treat them as such. We should take them out to explore. Keep their interest. Become apart of the one who explores with them. Exploring can be an incredible bonding experience.
Until next time!! Take care!
